In fall of 2008, my daughter and I fostered Ted and his littermates for 13th Street Cats. His brothers and sisters found other homes, but Ted bonded with us. He was the third cat we adopted, and eventually, Ted was part of a household of six cats.

About a year ago, my daughter moved to Palo Alto, and I moved around the corner to a smaller house. All six cats went outside to live in a backyard shed shelter. Neither of us could take the cats with us, because our new housemates could not tolerate cats. I visit and feed the cats every day. Ted would sunbathe on the sidewalk and was very friendly with the neighbors.

But outdoor life is perilous, and at the end of April, a car hit Ted in front of the house. Neighbors rushed him to an emergency vet clinic. He had a long laceration on his left leg and a big scrape on his muzzle. Both were stiched up and have healed well. Ted also fractured his pelvis and dislocated his hip. We decided against surgery and have kept him confined to see how he heals on his own. He had an X-ray six weeks after the injury (June 9, 2016), which shows that the hip is still slightly dislocated and scar tissue has accumulated. The vet recommends another month of confinement.

Ted walks normally around my laundry room, where I have him confined. He does not appear to be in any pain. He uses the litter box and eats and drinks well. He can jump up on a low chair, which he does because he likes a perch. Ted is a very sweet guy who loves to sit on laps. He would make a great companion for someone with the time to sit and pet him. Although he tolerates living with other cats, I suspect he would love being someone's one and only cat.
